Beberapa waktu lalu saya browsing mencari software untuk pemetaan cakupan Internet WiFi Hotspot (coverage) yang gratis tentunya. Pingin tahu saja, bagaimana bentuk coverage wafi disekitar sini. Sebelumnya saya pernah melihat Stumbverter yang bisa mengimport data dari Netstumbler namun perlu alat penerima GPS (Global Positioning System) untuk melengkapi data dengan koordinatnya. Sayang saya belum punya GPS, jadi belum sempat mencoba Stumbverter ini. Namun ternyata ada juga software gartsi yang cukup bagus untuk mapping sinyal wifi tanpa perlu alat GPS.
Software ini bernama Ekahau HeatMapper dan bisa didownload secara gratis. Beberapa Fitur yang ada di perangkat lunak ini antara lain :
- Melihat Cakupan sinyal Wi-Fi dalam sebuah peta/map
- Meprediksi lokasi/letak Access Point
- Mendeteksi tipe/jenis keamanan WiFi (WPA, WEP, atau Open System)
- Didesiagn untuk survey di rumah/ office dalam skala kecil
- Gratis dan proses install sangat cepat
- Supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g dan n (draft)

Bagaimana cara menggunakannya?
- Baca aturan penggunaan dan silahkan Download software-nya
- Install dan jalankan
- Tentukan lokasi yang akan disurvey, misal ruangan 1 lantai saja dulu
- Jika ada Map/Peta/Design/layout/gambar ruang yang akan disurvey (file image) akan lebih mudah
- Jika Map tidak ada, anda tetap bisa namun akurasinya dan penentuan titik survey akan kesulitan.
- Tentukan Titik awal start dan mulailah bergerak (membawa laptop anda).
- Anda harus sering meng KLIK kiri di MAP sesuai dengan Posisi Sebenarnya.
- Sepertinya tidak ada aturan anda harus bergerak kemana dulu dan model pergerakan yang seperti apa.
- Namun yang pasti semakin banyak titik berbeda dalam map yang terwakili gambar akan terlihat lebih bagus.
- Setelah selesai anda bisa melihat hasilnya.
- Jika tidak keberatan anda bisa tunjukan ke saya 🙂

Kekurangan?
Sedikit Informasi tambahan, selain sofware ini cukup bermanfaat namun ada kekurangnya (mungkin karena versi gratis) yang versi full/profesionalnya mahal sekali :
- Hasil tidak bisa disimpan, untuk dilanjutkan di lain waktu
- Hasil yang bisa dinikamati saat selesai dan di simpan dalam bentuk file image (Take Screenshot)
- Menu yang terbatas hanya Take Screenshot, Undo dan Redo survey
